Course Description

Level 1 achievement standards that provides an entry into New Zealand Agricultural and Horticultural Industries.

Areas covered include:

  • Practical skills.
  • Soil science.
  • Agricultural and horticultural investigation.
  • Environmental impact. 
  • Horticultural plant management or livestock management. 

Also included:

  • Classroom & outdoor learning.
  • Field trips to growers, farm and marketing companies.
  • Literacy and numeracy credits.




Course Overview

Term 1
Soil science principles and their appliation within an experimental investigation. Planned field trip to the New Zealand's largest kiwifruit nursery and Zespri head office.

Term 2
Class splits between Horticulture or Agriculture. Horticulture students consider management stratergies to optimise crop production while agricultural students consider the livestock managment of deer, pigs, cows, lamb and beef.

Term 3
Environmental impact of New Zealand primary industry. Field visit to a kiwifruit orchard and progresses of student practical skills and potential farm visit for Agricultural students.

Term 4
Complete of practical skills and examination revision.

Prerequisites

  • Open Entry. 
  • Students who have taken 10AGH will have priority.
  • A proven record of self management is required given the need to complete tasks outside of the classroom, working with industry tools and off site visits.
