Course Description

Biology is the study of living things and their interactions with each other and their environment.
• Biological skills
• Animal systems
• Micro-organisms
• Genetics

Course Overview

Term 1
Micro-organisms. Students learn to carry out an experiment. Students learn how to grow micro-organisms on agar plates using aseptic technique.
Mammals as consumers. Students learn about the similarities and differences in the way that mammals obtain nutrition.

Term 2
Micro-organisms. Students learn about the variety of microbes, their way of life and the way that they reproduce.

Term 3
Genetics. Students learn about the diversity of life at the genetic level. Students learn how genetic diversity can be increased or decreased and how populations adapt over time.
Critical thinking. Students learn how to think critically about comtemporary issues in biology such as vaccination and fluoridation.

Term 4
Carbon cycle. Students learn how a key nutrient in the ecosystem is continuously replenished and used in a number of different locations in nature.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for Level 1, but preference will be given to those who pass all the Year 10 end of year examinations.
Students may take BIO1 and SCI1 with the permission of the HOD. They should be aware there are some shared Achievement Standards
There is a large research component to this course so we strongly recommend a personal device that has a keyboard.
