Course Description

English is the study, use, and enjoyment of the English language and literature written in the English language.

Building on the skills learned in Year 9, students will continue to peer under the hood of literature and language in all its forms in order to build their own language toolbox.

By understanding how language works, students are able to communicate effectively with others, make good language choices in a range of areas in their own lives, and achieve their goals in all subject areas.

This is a compulsory course in Year 10.

Students will be placed in appropriate classes according to their reading and writing curriculum levels.

Course Overview

Term 1
Diagnostic Writing Task: Provides a clear benchmark for the teacher to understand how to best help you grow as a writer.

Diagnostic Reading (e-asTTle): Provides a clear benchmark for the teacher to understand how to best help you grow as a reader.

Short Text Unit: you will explore different styles of texts with a focus on character development, themes, and setting.

Writing Exploration: you will explore various genres of writing, with a focus on enjoying the process.

Term 2
Extended Text Unit: you will read and analyse a novel, with a focus on character development, themes and setting.

Writing Exploration: you will explore various genres of writing, with a focus on enjoying the process.

Term 3
Speech/Presentation: you will develop a presentation to share with your class.

Visual Language Unit: you will explore the different aspects of filmmaking and why they are used, before sharing with us your thoughts on what a particular scene means to you.

Writing Exploration: you will explore various genres of writing, with a focus on enjoying the process.

Term 4
Examination preparation: your teacher will guide you in preparing for an examination that reflects the progress you have made since the start of the year. The examination is comprised of one piece of summative writing and a final e-asTTle reading test.
