Course Description

This course is designed for students that wish to continue Mathematics at Level 2. It involves a combination of Algebra, Statistics and Probability. There is one External Assessment. The topics covered are:
•Systems of Equations (Algebra)
•Trigonometry Relationships (Algebra)
•Informal Inference (Statistics)
•Co-ordinate Geometry (Algebra)
•Networks (Algebra)
•Probability (Probability External Examination)
Course Overview
Term 1
The term starts with 'Informal Inference' which is a statistics-based standard using the full statistical cycle with a multi-variate data set. The understanding of these skills will allow a greater understanding when learning in MAT3 the following year.
The second half of the term will focus on the topic 'Networks'. This topic covers critical paths, which can be thought of as what roads should you take to go from one place to another.
Term 2
This term there is a focus on internal assessments. Students will start the term using revising algebra skills to help learn 'Trigonometric Relationships'. The relationships are all non-right-angled triangle relationships.
The second half of the term will be using algebraic substitution to learn 'Co-ordinate Geometry'.
Term 3
The final internal assessment of the year is the focus for the first half of this term. Classes start learning 'Systems of Equations' which is an algebra-based standard which focuses on where two different paths meet.
The remainder of this term classes will focus on 'Probability'. This is an external assessment which involves applying probability methods in solving problems. Topics covered are risk and relative risk, normal distribution, relative frequencies and probability trees.
Term 4
This term classes will focus on revision of 'Probability'. This is an external assessment which involves applying probability methods in solving problems.
Prerequisites
Achieve a C grade or better in IGCSE or Te Punga Mathematics. Alternatively, you will need HOD approval.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
In-class/at home workbooks and study guides required during the year cost approximately $20.
