Mathematics - Level 2
Teacher in Charge: S. Furness
This course is designed for students that wish to continue Mathematics at Level 2. It involves a combination of Algebra, Statistics and Probability. The topics covered are:
• Sequences and Series (Algebra)
• Trigonometry Relationships (Algebra)
• Statistics; Sampling (Statistics)
• Co-ordinate Geometry (Algebra)
• Networks (Algebra)
• Simulation (Probability)
• Algebraic Methods (Algebra)
• Probability (Probability)
The term starts with a revision of algebra skills. The understanding of these skills will allow a greater understanding when learning various topics throughout the year. Once the revision is completed, the class will focus on 'Trigonometric Relationships'. The relationships are all non-right-angled triangle relationships.
The second half of the term is a focus on number patterns and substituting into a formula for 'Sequences and Series'.
This term there is a focus on internal assessments. Students will start the term using basic algebra to learn 'Systems of Equations'. The second half of the term 'Co-Ordinate Geometry' will be covered which is a combination of algebraic substitution and geometry.
There is further internal assessment this term. Classes start with 'Informal Inference' which is a statistics-based standard using the full statistical cycle with a multi-variate data set.
The second part of the term is based on 'Networks'. This topic covers critical paths, which can be thought of as what roads should you take to go from one place to another.
This term classes will focus on 'Probability'. This is an external assessment which involves applying probability methods in solving problems. Topics covered are risk and relative risk, normal distribution, relative frequencies and probability trees.
