11 Design & Visual Communication

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Lyndon Sheehan.

This course focuses on nurturing a more mature and independent approach that will level up your design and drawing skills in a creative nature. Through two engaging real-life scenarios, students will tackle the "Life-Saving Tower" brief, designing and creating a 3D model of the structure, and the "Classic Kiwi Beach Bach" brief, where they'll design a beachfront dwelling and produce a 3D CAD representation. The year concludes with students selecting their favourite project and crafting a promotional product to showcase their best work. Assessments cover design drawing skills, freehand sketching, CAD drawings, Graphics Practice, design thinking and presentation techniques such as 3D modelling, video fly-throughs and design boards.

Course Overview

Term 1
Assessment 1 (Weeks 1-4):
• Focuses on cultivating your design drawing skills. The aim is to equip you with the ability to convey your ideas logically and clearly through visual means.

Assessment 2 (Weeks 5-10):
• Building on the foundation established in the first assessment, you'll use your developed graphics practice skills to navigate the design process and develop a concept for a life-saving tower.

Term 2
Assessment 2 (Weeks 1-4):
• Your journey continues as you refine your life-saving tower concept, working it into a finalized design.
(Weeks 5-6): To conclude this assessment, you'll construct a physical model to represent the final outcome of your life-saving tower design.

Assessment 3 (Weeks 7-10):
• In this next assessment, using graphics practice, you will engage with the design process to develop a logical layout and creative outcome of a Classic Kiwi bach.

Term 3
Assessment 3 (Weeks 1-6):
• Using Computer Aided Design (CAD), you'll bring your Classic Kiwi Bach design to life on software utilized by architects called "Archicad." The workflow will involve creating a 3D model and subsequently generating a set of 2D working drawings, comprising floor plans, site plans, elevations, and intricate sectional views.

Assessment 4 (Weeks 7-10):
• The final assessment is a Level 2 NCEA Achievement Standard, where you'll use visual communication techniques to compose a presentation of a design. This will earn you 4 Level 2 credits. Your presentation will showcase your polished skills and creative accomplishments of your best work from the year in a promotional format.

• Weeks 1- 3: Completing Achievement Standard: Use visual communication techniques to compose a presentation of a design.
