Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Rhian Elmes.

Design is the study of photography, design, computer generated art, electronic media and film. It is through a combination of these forms we communicate, learn about ourselves and make meaning of the world.

Level One Design in 2024 will seek to provide opportunity for students to experience and experiment with a range of digital media as they work towards an end of year showcase exhibition.

Learning will include:

1. Animation Design

2. Branding: Logo Design and Marketing for the exhibition.

3. Collage and Digital Montage- the use of photography to deconstruct and reconstruct design ideas.

4. The way in which design is viewed and valued and how the context of the work changes this.

Course Overview

Term 1
Students will participate in a process of learning about different methods of creating design and imagery. This will include but is not limited to Photography, Collage and Digital Montage processes and mixed media to create mark making for use within design outcomes. This term will run in two week blocks and require students to document their working process to be assessed on their thinking and critique of methods.

Term 2
Students will begin looking at how to market an end of year showcase. They will look at their audience, the context their work will be viewed in and how best to target this audience. Outcomes will include the branding for the event, marketing material such as posters, instagram advertisements and reels. Students will be assessed on their proposed marketing material and branding guidelines.
Alongside this students will select their prefered style of work and begin unpacking the work of their selected artist model.

Term 3
Students will identify a topical, relevant issue that their design outcomes will explore for the duration of this term. This idea should be selected from the local community in which we live and the current issues society faces. Students will write a proposal for this and then begin exploring how best to show this idea in visual form. Students will choose their own media and will be encouraged to independently explore this. The assessment for this term is for students to have generated a body of work that shows their initial decision making in themes, typeface selection, artist model ideas and real world context.

Term 4
Students will learn about curating an exhibition and the decisions they will need to make in the lead up to the Showcase. A visit to the space will be involved and students will document this to best understand how to format and present their work. Using the work created in Term 3 students will continue to refine their ideas to create a body of work for submission from which their exhibition pieces will come from. Community engagement and how their work will be viewed and valued is important. Students will be assessed on both their portfolio of ideas as well as their resolved final exhibition piece.
