Course Description

Students will undertake a rich program of learning, integrating Cambridge IGCSE First Language while preparing students for the rigours of Level 2 NCEA. English offers candidates the opportunity to respond with understanding to an array of texts during the course as a whole. Candidates will use these texts to inform and inspire their own writing and write in a range of text types for different purposes and audiences. Candidates are encouraged to become appreciative and critical readers, writers, speakers, and listeners.
Cambridge IGCSE First Language English allows learners to:
•develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing
•learn how to use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation
•develop a personal style and an awareness of the audience being addressed.
This is a compulsory course in Year 11. Students will be placed in appropriate classes according to their reading and writing levels.
Course Overview
Term 1
Students will read/watch/listen to a range of texts and critically analyse the language used to target a specific audience. Foundation grammatical skills will be emphasised, as will the deliberate structuring of a text. Students will understand that language is a living entity that is vital in exploring our own identities.
Term 2
Students will develop their understanding of reading and literature. In the process, students will develop the ability to think critically and improve the fluency of their writing. Students will also read, and respond to independently selected texts, which will strengthen their reading skills.
Term 3
Students will focus on written composition this term. Tasks will enable students to explore a variety of writing structures and styles. The culmination of the study will be an externally assessed Cambridge paper.
Term 4
Students will learn how to understand and analyse unfamiliar written texts. This will enable them to better understand the written texts that they encounter in day-to-day life; it will also improve their literacy skills in general. Additionally, students will develop their grasp of verbal language and the inquiry process.
