English Accelerated 2
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Jana Pretorius.
The Accelerated English course challenges students to consider how their perspectives, opinions, and knowledge connect with texts. Within this course there is a focus on developing effective communication skills, including written, spoken, and visual language. It is also about enriching our understanding of ourselves and our society by connecting with literature, history, society, and human nature. There is an extended text component of the course wherein students can use these skills developed throughout the year to connect the text to both self and society.
Course Overview
Term 1
Students will learn about the conventions of different writing genres before crafting their own pieces of writing. The emphasis is on using commanding written language to form perceptive ideas. Students will be exposed to a wide range of literature, promoting the growth of their own language skills.
Term 2
In Term 2, students will focus on reading a variety of texts for both pleasure and analysis. Students will be exposed to visual, oral and written texts, with a strong emphasis on student choice. Relating personally to issues within literature is important, considering how it is a reflection of our society over time. Discussions will incorporate our own perspectives, opinions and values.
Term 3
Close study of a written text enables students to develop expertise. They work to solidify understanding of the purpose and crafting, and to convey this in a structured and supported manner. Developing confidence in oral communication is a significant goal.
Term 4
Preparation for exams will incorporate literary essays, vocabulary and text analysis. Study skills will be utilised by students, with support from staff. Individuals will be empowered to develop organisation and drive, through goal setting and personal reflection.
