11 Mathematics

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Damien Galvan.

Taking IGCSE Mathematics will enable students to:

✓ develop their understanding of the mathematical concepts and methods

✓ solve problems and interpret findings

✓ become experienced in a wide range of technical and social tools

✓ develop skills like time management, communication and digital literacy

IGCSE Mathematics will develop mathematical knowledge as a key life skill, and as a basis for more advanced study.

The course aims to build learners’ confidence by helping them develop a feel for numbers, patterns and relationships, and places a strong emphasis on solving problems and presenting and interpreting results. Learners also gain an understanding of how to communicate and reason using mathematical concepts.

Course Overview

Term 1
NUMBER
Number conversions into and out of standard form, calculation of values, and application of positive and negative numbers. Working with rates, ratios, rational and irrational numbers. Applying fractions, decimals, and percentages to financial literacy.

Term 2
ALGEBRA
Algebra & Graphs - Derive and solve simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns or one quadratic. Learn to represent and interpret inequalities on a number line.
Coordinate Geometry - Interpret and obtain the equation of a straight line graph; Determine the equation of a straight line parallel to a given line; Find the gradient of parallel and perpendicular line.

NUMERACY
An opportunity to gain US32406.

Term 3
SHAPE & SPACE
Geometry - Use the basic congruence criteria for triangles (SSS, ASA, SAS, RHS); Recognise rotational and line symmetry in two dimensions, as well as symmetry properties of the prism and the pyramid.
Mensuration - Carry out calculations involving the surface areas, areas and volumes of compound shapes.
Trigonometry - Recognise, sketch and interpret graphs of simple trigonometric functions; Solve problems using the sine and cosine rules f
Vectors & transformations - Calculate the magnitude of a vector and represent it by directed line segments.

Term 4
PROBABILITY & STATISTICS
Probability - Calculate conditional probability using Venn diagrams, tree diagrams and tables.
Statistics - Calculate an estimate of the mean for grouped and continuous data; identify the modal class from a grouped frequency distribution; estimate and interpret the median, percentiles, quartiles and interquartile range.

NUMERACY
An opportunity to gain US32406.

Prerequisites

Students will be placed into this course based on their Year 10 examination and NCEA Numeracy achievement. Students who do not qualify for this course will be placed into the 11MAN course, which focuses on achieving NCEA Numeracy in Year 11.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

In-class/at home workbooks and study guides required during the year range from $20-$35 (in total).
