Course Description

In a range of meaningful contexts, students will be engaged in thinking mathematically.

Students will solve problems and model situations that require them to apply statistical and probability techniques. 

Students that choose this course can also take MAC2 (Calculus) as an option.

Course Overview

Term 1
The term starts with students learning how to 'Design a Questionnaire' using the statistical inquiry cycle. Important key skills in this unit include writing suitable questions, layout, survey types and sample selection.

The last part of the term will be focused on 'Using Simulations'. Students investigate a situation involving elements of chance using a simulation. Students will design a simulation, run it and communicate their findings in a report.

Term 2
The statistical theme continues this term with students studying 'Statistically Based Reports'. Students will get the opportunity to use the statistical cycle to evaluate a statistically based report on a population.

In the second half of the term students will be 'Conducting Experiments' to investigate situations using statistical methods. Students will plan, conduct, analyse and review experiments to form a conclusion.

Term 3
We begin term 3 with the only external offered in this course 'Probability Methods in Solving Problems'. Topics covered are, risk and relative risk, normal distribution, relative frequencies and probability trees.

The second half of the term will focus on 'Making an Informal Inference' where students will use statistical methods to make a decision about a population. Students will be introduced to the concept of sampling and confidence intervals.

Term 4
This term students will study for their Probability external examination.

Prerequisites

A 'C' grade or better in IGCSE or in Te Punga for Mathematics. HOD approval can be given in some cases.

Pathway

To progress from MAS2 to MAC3 (Calculus) students would need to complete the Level 2 Calculus external assessments.

Credit Information

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

This course is eligible for subject endorsement.
Course endorsement provides recognition for a student who has performed exceptionally well in an individual course.
Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve:
* 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, and
* at least 3 of these credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits from internally assessed standards.
