Course Description

Welcome to the Tauranga Boys’ College English Department.

English is the study, use, and enjoyment of the English language and literature written in the English language.

In English, students learn to break apart the literature and language of others in order to understand the power that language has to enrich and shape their lives. 

By understanding how language works, students are then able to make good language choices in a range of areas in their own lives to achieve their goals.

Course Overview

Term 1
Diagnostic Writing Task: Provides a clear benchmark for the teacher to understand how to best help you grow as a writer.

Diagnostic Reading (e-asTTle): Provides a clear benchmark for the teacher to understand how to best help you grow as a reader.

Thematic Unit - Text study: you will explore different styles of texts with a focus on character development, themes, and setting.


Term 2
Short Text Unit: you will read and analyse a variety of short texts, with a focus on character development, themes and setting.

Writing Exploration: you will explore various genres of writing, with a focus on enjoying the process.

Term 3
Extended Text Unit: you will read and analyse a novel, with a focus on character development, themes and setting.

Speech/Presentation: you will develop a presentation to share with your class based on your research.


Term 4
Visual Language Unit: you will explore the different aspects of filmmaking and why they are used, before sharing with us your thoughts on what a particular scene means to you.

Examination preparation: your teacher will guide you in preparing for an examination that reflects the progress you have made since the start of the year. The examination is comprised of one piece of summative writing and a final e-asTTle reading test.
