Course Description

• 2 stroke, 4 stroke, rotary, petrol and diesel engines - theory and practical work.
• Systems of the motor vehicle.
• Automotive measuring and hand tools.


This course is mostly theory based.


Course Overview

Term 1
Develop an understanding of the functioning of a two stroke engine by disassembling and reassembling a small two stroke engine.
Develop an understanding of safety while working within a workshop environment. Understanding and demonstrating safe practices when using tools and machines.
These tasks will be dependant on a workshop space being available. Otherwise it will be theory based.

Term 2
Developing further the basic knowledge about engines and learning how other systems within a vehicle function. This knowledge ranges from the vehicles electrical, gearbox and transmissions, differentials and body panels.
This portion of the course is theory based.

Term 3
Building on the previous personal workshop safety, the students learn and discuss emergency procedures in a wider range of workshop environments. This is directed towards managing hazards and the required actions when emergency services are needed. This reenforces the safety aspect of the industry and creates an awareness of potential hazards.
The students will learn about the tools and engineering tasks which are often required in the Motor Industry. The first portion of this is theory based, with the aim of returning to a school workshop towards the end of the term.

Term 4
If a workshop is available, the students will demonstrate the safe and appropriate use of the tools they have been learning. The aim is to allow them practical time to refine their skills and develop new knowledge in a practical setting.
Time allowing, they will disassemble their original engines and reassemble them with less teacher guidance. There is the potential for them to create small tools which they could use while working on vehicles.
