Gateway

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr T. Collin.

The Gateway course is designed to strengthen the pathway for senior students to progress from school to the workplace or tertiary study. It provides students with structured workplace learning, across a range of industries and businesses, while they continue to study at school.

Students are given the opportunity to test-drive their career choices by gaining real workplace experience. All students who are part of the Gateway class will go into the community on placement for at least one day each week for a minimum of 10 weeks. The Gateway programme requires that students complete a minimum of 20 industry-based credits.

We are fortunate to have partnerships with a range of businesses and providers in Tauranga Moana. It is these partners who provide the real value for our Gateway students. The examples of Gateway placements outlined below are ones that we will more than likely be able to run in 2024:

  • Mainfreight - Students who do their work experience at Mainfreight will have the opportunity to experience the logistics industry including experiences such as freight loading, devannning, truck delivery work, warehousing and data collection.
  • JNP Aviation Training - This connection will allow students to experience what work is like at Tauranga Airport. They will get insight into working the control tower, risk management, baggage handling and ramp management.
  • The Athlete Factory - This one is for the heavy lifters. The Athlete Factory offers an opportunity for students to start work towards their personal training qualifications while on placement at one of the best gyms in the region.
  • Dommet Engineering - Students in this placement go straight into a heavy trailer manufacturing business and learn the ropes of working in a full workshop including welding and fabrication skills.

We encourage applications from students who want to get involved in industries or businesses that are not on the list. In this case we can find work placements for students and are happy to communicate with new companies that students really want to work at. For example we currently have more than 10 students doing their placement at different automotive shops throughout Tauranga. Furthermore, students are able to work one day a week with a suitable connection found by friends or family.

Course Overview

Term 1
The course will start with a unit standard that all students do together: Produce a plan for own future directions.
As this unit progresses, students will provide information on where they wish to undergo their work placements and staff can start facilitating work experience.
From there, the course takes a personalised approach where students work on standards that are connected to their placements.
Further full-class unit standards may be added to complement the placement-based standards.

Term 2
Students will be on work placement one day per week as per Gateway requirements.
Time in the classroom will be used to support the students to work through standards related to their work placement.
Students will be working on individual learning plans through organisations such as: MITO, Shift Up, Start Up, Logistics, Primary ITO, and Aviation.
Time will be allowed for students to catch up on work they are missing in other subjects due to time out of school for work experience.

Term 3
Students will work through a variety of work-based and class-based standards.
They will also be given time to complete work from other subjects, should they need it.
Those who wish to transition out of school will be supported in this process.
Depending on workplace availability, some students will still be doing their work placements.

Term 4
Students who wish to transition out of school will be supported in this process. This may take the form of apprenticeships, further study, or employment.
Time will be provided to complete any leftover classwork, from this or any other subject.

Prerequisites

There are no subject-based prerequisites for this course. However, to be suitable for this course you must be willing to spend at least 10 days on work placement, you must be reliable, respectful, and organised. At times, this course will place you outside of school where you'll be representing yourself, your family, and your school.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

Despite all the opportunities that this course offers, there is no cost.

Pathway

The focus of the Gateway class is to get our young men into work places, then support them as they move into employment, apprenticeships and tertiary training. Many of the students that take Gateway as a subject will transition out of school at the end of Year 12, but some may wish to continue at college and finish Year 13.

Assessment Information

Students will complete a mixture of work-based and class-based credits. The above standards are examples of units that will be covered in class; standards that are attached to work placements will be personalised to each student. A minimum of 20 credits will be available on this course.
