English is about developing language skills that help us understand and communicate with the world around us.

Standards may include:
- Literature studies
- Close viewing of visual text
- Critically analysing connections between texts
- Speech
- Close reading of unfamiliar texts

Course Overview

Term 1
Make connections across texts - students will read/watch/listen to a range of texts and critically analyse the connections between them. In the process, students will develop the ability to think critically and improve the fluency of their writing.

Term 2
Students will develop their understanding of visual language by critically analysing various aspects of film and/or television. In the process, students will develop the ability to think critically and improve the fluency of their writing.

Term 3
Students will develop their grasp of spoken language by planning and delivering a presentation to the class. In the process, students will improve their mastery of verbal communication.
Students will learn how to critically analyse unfamiliar written texts. This will enable them to better understand the written texts that they encounter beyond school, and generally improve their literacy skills.

Term 4
Revision of external standard 3.1: respond critically to unfamiliar texts.

Prerequisites

If you did not take a pathway course at Level 2, or achieved fewer than 14 credits in that course, you will need HOD approval.
