English - Level 3

English is about developing language skills that help us understand and communicate with the world around us. This course will develop students' ability to understand meaning, whether it be written, spoken, or visual, and it will promote the capacity to create meaning. Students will finish this course will a better ability to understand and shape language, so that they can think critically as adults.
Make connections across texts - students will read/watch/listen to a range of texts and critically analyse the connections between them. In the process, students will develop the ability to think critically and improve the fluency of their writing.
Students will develop their understanding of visual language by critically analysing various aspects of film and/or television. In the process, students will develop the ability to think critically and improve the fluency of their writing.
Students will develop their ability to shape language through writing fluently in a variety of genres. Students will learn how to critically analyse unfamiliar written texts. This will enable them to better understand the written texts that they encounter beyond school, and generally improve their literacy skills.
Revision of external standard 3.1: respond critically to unfamiliar texts.
If you did not take a pathway course at Level 2, or achieved fewer than 14 credits in that course, you will need HOD approval.
This course is eligible for subject endorsement.
Course endorsement provides recognition for a student who has performed exceptionally well in an individual course.
Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve:
14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, and
at least 3 of these credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits from internally assessed standards.
