13 Academic English (ACEG3)
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Glenn Campbell.
This course is suitable for students for whom English is not their first language. It offers the opportunity to achieve English Achievement Standards in an environment suited to second language speakers. Students will have the opportunity to complete their University Entrance literacy credits. Where English language skills are very low, students will be offered the opportunity to complete English Language unit standards to support their achievement of each NCEA level. Some students may be working on level two credits.
Course Overview
Term 1
Students begin the year by watching, analysing, and writing an essay about the films of a well known director. This standard will be the students first internal assessment. This is important because it provides valuable credits and can also be adapted as another piece of work for the writing portfolio later in term three. The students will also develop another piece of writing for the writing portfolio.
Term 2
In term 2 the students will begin work on a piece of creative writing for the writing portfolio. They will also begin to develop the skills needed for the level 3 Unfamiliar Texts exam. They will have a practice examination during the term to gain better understanding and familiarity with the requirements. Students may begin preparing work towards another chosen assessment.
Term 3
In Term Three both level two and three students will begin work on their self selected assessment standards. They will work towards further reading, writing, and presenting standards. All internal assessments will be completed by the end of this term. Students will have another opportunity to sit a practice exam for Level 3 Unfamiliar Texts examination.
Term 4
All students sitting the external examinations will work towards gaining a thorough understanding of text analysis and question specific responses. Students may be tidying up any loose ends such as assessment resits before going on study leave.
