Geography is about the relationship between people and the natural world. It is about the world around us, how people experience It, and how people remake the world.
- Natural hazards (floods or volcanoes and hurricanes)
- Weather studies
- Mapping, graphing, and interpretation skills.
- Analytical thinking and decision making
- Sustainability
Course Overview
Term 1
Natural hazards ( cyclones or tsunamis). What causes hazards and what are the effects?
Term 2
Weather studies and sustainability
Beach studies on Muriwai. An investigation into conflict between beach users
Term 3
Skills: mapping, graphing, and interpretation of statistics,
Sustainability: Case study of the Maldives.
Term 4
Revision for externals
Prerequisites
Achieved in the Year 10 Social Studies exam, or by HOD approval.
Pathway
Geography leads onto many careers and courses. It leads to careers in planning, mining, forestry, surveying, tourism, resource use, teaching, conservation work, environmental studies, town planning, and meteorology.
Credit Information
This course is eligible for subject endorsement.
Course endorsement provides recognition for a student who has performed exceptionally well in an individual course.
Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve:
* 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, and
* at least 3 of these credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits from internally assessed standards.
This course is approved for University Entrance.
