• Research the purposes of production, performance, and technologies of drama in a range of contexts, including New Zealand drama
• Explore how drama reflects our cultural diversity
• Select and refine the use of techniques, conventions, and technologies in specific dramatic forms
• Research, Critically evaluate, and refine ideas to develop drama in specific dramatic forms
• Rehearse and perform works in a range of dramatic forms
• Respond to and make critical judgments about rehearsal processes and performances

Course Overview

Term 1
New Zealand theatre. After reading extracts from contemporary plays, and considering the style and structure of New Zealand theatre, students will explore effective use of techniques (voice, body, space, movement) within the context of presenting an extract from a New Zealand play.

A.S. 91213 Drama 2.1 - Apply drama techniques in a scripted context

Term 2
An introduction to Stanislavsky's method through an exploration of Realism, focusing on Twentieth Century Realist plays. They will perform an extract from a realist play agreed upon with their teacher, selecting appropriate techniques and conventions to evoke a realistic performance.

Students will refer to this performance and theatre form in their practice exam in term 3 and external in term 4.

A.S. 91216 Drama 2.4 - Use complex performance skills associated with a drama or theatre form or period

Term 3
Students will explore a theatre practitioner and use conventions of the practitioner to inform their own devised Drama. Performance of these pieces will be in front of a live invited adult audience. Students will be encouraged to use sound and lighting to enhance their pieces, working with technicians to realise a vision.

Term 4
Revision of features of 20th Century Realism
