Course Overview

Term 1
2.2/2.4 - Students complete a teaching and learning programme in Volleyball and Basketball. Whilst completing this we run through a refresher course on Anatomy, Biomechanics and look at how Skill learning and coaching, influence your ability to learn new skills. Students then get assessed on their practical ability in either Volleyball or Basketball. They then choose a skill to work on, complete base-line testing and go through a specific learning programme they design to improve. They reflect on this in a written assessment at the end of the term.

Term 2
2.3 - Methods and Principles of training - students complete a weight training programme, after setting goals and completing a fitness test. They do the programme for 7 weeks and then reflect on how and why they used the methods and principles and the impact of this training.

Term 3
Mountain Biking: 2.8 - Social Responsibility and 2.4 'Practical Performance' - Boys attend a day trip to the Redwoods in Rotorua where they are assessed on their ability to be socially responsible, be safe, help others and listen to and follow instructions. They are also assessed on their ability to mountain bike around a timed course as part of the 2.4 performance standard.

2.6 - Coaching and Leadership - Boys work through a range of strategies under the headings of Communication, Motivation and Management and investigate how these influence people in a team environment. They then coach younger students in a range of primary schools around Tauranga and reflect on how the strategies worked, what went well and what could be improved next time.
