Te Punga - Year 11 Certificate


TE PUNGA - The Anchor, references Tauranga harbour which has provided a safe anchorage since the arrival of Tākitimu, and Mataatua. The purpose of Te Punga is to provide an anchor, a stable platform, for our boys to reach for their aspirations. Te Punga will best prepare our students for NCEA Level 2 and beyond.

TE PUNGA is a comprehensive Year 11 Certificate programme designed to foster academic engagement, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, communication, and connection to community, whanau and each other. This course aims to develop students' skills and character traits that embody the qualities of a good man, including being respectful, generous, loyal, resilient, committed, and honest.

Te PungaThrough TE PUNGA,  students will have the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to personal growth and academic excellence. Key indicators of successful completion include maintaining 95% or higher attendance, actively engaging in service, leadership, and extracurricular activities, and achieving a minimum academic attainment:

NCEA Literacy and NCEA Numeracy.

Additionally, to successfully complete TE PUNGA, students must pass four or more subjects, demonstrating their dedication to academic achievement across multiple disciplines.

TE PUNGA offers a holistic approach to education, emphasising the integration of academic and personal growth. By actively participating in this course, students will develop not only their intellectual abilities but also their character traits, preparing them for future academic pursuits, career success, and positive contributions to society.

TE PUNGA is a year-long programme designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience. Successful completion will result in the awarding of the Year 11 Certificate.


Students can be awarded one of three certificates:

TE PUNGA IHI - Learning Certificate

This certificate is a ‘record of learning’ listing the achievements of the student.

Te PungaTE PUNGA WEHI - Year 11 Certificate

  • 95%+ attendance (ie no more than 5% Unexplained Absences)
  • Service and/or leadership and/or extracurricular involvement
  • Literacy and Numeracy
  • Pass in four or more subjects

TE PUNGA WANA - Year 11 Advanced Certificate

  • 95%+ attendance (ie no more than 5% Unexplained Absences)
  • Service and/or leadership and/or extracurricular involvement
  • Literacy and Numeracy
  • A in one core subject and an A in one other subject
  • Plus a C or better in three or more other subjects

Bronze Centurion Award for a ‘pass’ in all assessments


Year 11 students will study six subjects

  • English  (Cambridge International IGCSE)
  • Mathematics (Cambridge International IGCSE)
  • a Science 
  • Plus three options
