How can the Head of Future Pathways help?

Our Head of Future Pathways can help with exploring interests and strengths, then helping a student match these to possible career options.School_FrontThis can be for short-term goals, such as choosing an option, or it can be for long-term goals, such as meeting prerequisites for a potential career pathway.

We can help your son explore the networks he has, or help him connect to the variety of networks that we have within the Tauranga community. We can help with employment, both full and part-time positions, as well as trades training opportunities, apprenticeships, student allowances and access to STAR and Gateway courses.

How students and their families can help?

Book an appointment with Mr Collin to discuss potential options for employment or further study.

Ensure that you are aware of closing dates for applications and follow-up appointments. The school is very keen to see every student working towards a career path of their choice but is not responsible for ensuring application deadlines are reached.

Gateway

The Gateway programme is designed to strengthen the pathway for senior students to progress from school to the workplace or tertiary study. It provides students with structured workplace learning, across a range of industries and businesses, while they continue to study at school.

Students are given the opportunity to test-drive their career choices, while gaining real and valuable experience. Gateway gives the students confidence to make a smooth transition from school to work or further study. The Gateway programme requires that students complete a minimum of 20 industry based credits.

Secondary-Tertiary Programme (STP)

School_FrontSTP aims to give students the skills and confidence to transition from Year 12 into further tertiary study (often a 1-year pre-trades level 3 course), gain an apprenticeship, or gain full-time employment.

Students will be given the privilege and responsibility of spending one day per week at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology to give them additional skills within their chosen area of study.

The focus of the course is strongly based on teaching good man qualities. Employers are looking for traits such as reliability, self-management, problem-solving and communication skills.

A mixture of workshop and classroom time will occupy three lines of a student's timetable. In this time they will cover a range of literacy, numeracy, community-based project work, industry visits and work experience placements with a single core teacher. This teacher will provide additional pastoral care to help prepare and transition students onto a meaningful next step at the end of the year.

Hospitality, Cafe Services, Engineering, Automotive, Transport & Logistics, Carpentry and Primary Industries are the current vocations we offer pathways in.

Pathways Planning

All senior students work closely with their form teachers around subject selection and career planning.  Parents are encouraged to be active in their son’s choices. Early in the year, parents, students and their form teachers discuss relevant academic and future pathways, and then students can deliberately prepare for their pathway in the remainder of the year.
