10MEN

Enrichment Mathematics

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Justin McCormack.

Mathematics is a broad subject and there are many topics that we do not have the time to cover in your core mathematics class.
The emphasis in this course will be on learning through puzzles and challenges rather than through written assessments.
The aim is to introduce you to a range of ideas that are rarely mentioned in the standard syllabus.

These will include;

Geometry Extension

- Topology (study of how shapes can be transformed into other shapes)
- Graph theory (how many colours do you need to colour in a map)

Number Extension

- Numbers in Different Bases (eg binary arithmetic)
- Modular Arithmetic (the study of remainders after division)

Structures

- Set Theory (the basis of much Mathematics in the Twentieth Century)
- Group Theory (how different structures in totally different areas of maths can share the same properties)

This course is a half-year option course for year 10, which will be assessed in the form of an End-of-Course Assessment.
There are no NZQA credits that cover this syllabus.

Pathway
