Building Related Trades 3
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Nathan Bradley.
In Partnership with BCITO
•A building industry based programme with a practical building project, theory unit standards and regular industry input.
•Students in small groups build a portable cabin following a full build process.
The Practical Build Project has a building site context away from the workshops.
Students visit industry sites to support their learning throughout the year.
Work experience is supported for students that identify a trade in view of starting an apprenticeship and employment.
This subject is 10 periods per week and in such takes 2 subject lines.
Maximum of 42 unit standard credits available.
Course Overview
Term 1
Health and Safety including a Workplace First Aid qualification.
Start construction of a transportable cabin in groups (level 3 BCATS project) in groups.
Term 2
Continue with Cabins gaining L3 industry unit standard credits.
Class visits industry workplaces in line with construction of the cabin for example, Pre nail Plant, Concrete Factory, Joinery Fabrication.
Term 3
Continue with Cabins gaining L3 industry unit standard credits.
Work Experience is encouraged and facilitated in the various trades within the building industry. This can lead to apprenticeships and employment.
Term 4
Same as Term 3 to completion.
Prerequisites
If you did not take a pathway course at Level 2, or achieved fewer than 14 credits in that course, you will need TIC exemption.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
$200 tools, personal protection equipment. Work Place Safety Certificate.
Pathway
The progression from Level 3 Building Trades is an apprenticeship within the many trades in the Building Industry. This may start as employment that leads to an apprencticeship or straight into an apprenticeship depending on the employer.
