Academic English (ACEG) 1
Course Description
Teacher in Charge: Ms D. Wilson
This course is suitable for students for whom English is not their first language. It offers the opportunity to achieve a combination of English Language Unit Standards and English Achievement Standards in an environment suited to second language speakers.
Course Overview
Term 1
Students will begin the year setting up their Reading Response portfolios, which they will work on independently over the course of the year. They will then learn how to complete an essay that identifies and analyses thematic connections across a variety of written and visual texts. Throughout the term, the students will become familiar with written and cinematic language techniques.
Term 2
The class will learn how to analyse visual and verbal techniques in a visual text and produce their own written analysis of an independently chosen text. Later in the term, the students will write and deliver their own oral presentation incorporating rhetorical devices. The students will practise the analysis of unfamiliar text.
Term 3
Term 3 will commence with a novel study that will examine character, theme and setting. The students will analyse the writer’s purpose and how it shapes the reader’s understanding. This will be assessed in the external assessments at the end of the year. All internal assessments will be completed.
Term 4
During term 4 students will be guided in preparation for the external assessments. Timed practise essays and the analysis of unfamiliar text will be the main focus in class.
