Course Overview

Term 1
The Year begins with a unit on strategies for success (AS 3.9 - 4 credits). This involves them completing some baseline testing and then choosing and implementing strategies to ensure they are ready to complete the day trip assessment to the Mount. They will complete a 2-hour Rogaine event run by the Hillary Outdoors on and around the Mauao and the Mount region. In the afternoon they will complete a surfing competition and be assessed against the practical standard for 3.4.

Double periods during term 1 involve heading to the Mount to go through a how-to-surf programme in order to be ready for the assessment. During class time the boys will have the strength and conditioning coach running fitness sessions to ensure they are working on their fitness strategies and are able to be successful in the Rogaine Challenge.

In the last 2 weeks of term, students will be given the opportunity to sign up for Diving through a Dive Zone. They will complete the Open Water Certificate in early term 2 but need to get a medical certificate, organise the associated paperwork and complete the online learning before they begin the practical sessions. These include 2 x pool days, a lake and a boat dive.

Term 2
Safety Management in the Outdoors is the theme for Term 2 with the boys looking into managing risk, how to build a safety management plan, how to establish and work with iwi and looking to work sustainably using the environmental care code through a range of trips and experiences.
The boys will complete a 2 day Timber trail Mountain biking trip early in Term 2 where they will be writing up and reviewing their safety management experiences. They do this through AS 3.7 worth 3 credits.

The last part of Term 2 moves into - Leadership in the outdoors (AS 3.8 - 4 credits). The students look at contemporary styles of leadership and utilise these styles during outdoor activities. They have a mountain biking camp in the redwoods - where they work in groups with everyone taking on and assuming a leadership role. On return from camp, they identify what style/s worked best for them and identify what works best in the outdoors.

Term 3
The boys continue on with the Leadership theme and then take this into a different experience in Term 3 with a 3 night Ski Trip to Mount Ruapehu. They will stay in Ohakune and will be heading to either Whakapapa or Turoa Skifields depending on which area suits our needs best at the time. Again they work in groups with everyone taking on and assuming a leadership role.

On return from camp, they identify what style/s worked best for them and identify what works best in the outdoors. They will complete the final part of the assessment for this where they write a paper reviewing what worked best for them and why.

Term 4
Across the year the students also complete the practical standard AS 3.4 - 4 credits. This is completed in mountain biking, surfing, skiing, snowboarding or other sport/s they complete when representing the school.
