11 Science

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Vicky Lacey.

This course involves study from the specialist areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics to provide students with a Science background to understand everyday Science, prepare for the workforce or to choose further study pathways (secondary and tertiary) in all specialist areas.  It is compulsory for all students take a Science subject in Year 11.

The course will contact Mechanics (Motion, Forces, Pressure and Energy), Physics investigations, Foundation Chemistry, Acids and Bases, Rates of Reaction, DNA and Cells and Genetic Variation.

Course Overview

Term 1
Develop an understanding of the world, built on current scientific theories;
Learn that Science involves particular processes and ways of developing and organising knowledge and that these continue to evolve.
Topic: Mechanics (Motion, Forces, Pressure, Energy) and Physics investigations

Term 2
Use current scientific knowledge and skills for problem-solving and developing further knowledge.
Topic: Chemistry (Foundation Chemistry, Acids and Bases, Rates of Reaction

Term 3
Use scientific knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about the communication, application, and implications of Science, as these relate to individual lives and cultures and to the sustainability of the environment.
Topic: Biology (DNA and Cells, Genetic Variation)

Term 4
Revision and extension.
Prepare students for success in the TBC examinations (Year 11 Certificate) and further study pathways.

Prerequisites

Open Entry - Students will be placed in appropriate classes according to their ability.
