Athlete Development 1

ADP1 is for students who have a genuine interest in improving their sporting performance and who show promise in their chosen sport(s). This course follows on from the sport specific Year 10 Athlete Development half year option. This programme has an emphasis on building a foundation for athletic performance for students to feed into TBC 1st teams.
This course is by selection. Students selected for this course will be decided by Mr Hyett. Priority will be for those students that have been selected for Junior 1st and 2nd teams and individual athletes who are competing to a high standard in their chosen sport. Selection is also based on attitude and effort in the Year 10 Athlete Development course.
This course is made up of five periods a week. Two of these are strength and conditioning and three periods based around NCEA Level One standards.
The strength and conditioning sessions are a compulsory requirement of this course.

As part of this course students will also take part in workshops on sports nutrition, sports psychology and drug free sport NZ.
ADP1, ADP2 and ADP3 have a theory and practical content for qualification purposes.
You may not study PHE1, PHE2 or PHE3 in conjunction with ADP1, ADP2 and ADP3.
Students are introduced to the requirements of the 1.1 Standard - Actively participate in physical activities and explain factors that influenced participation. This sees the start of an inter-class tournament that runs for the year across a range of different sports. Students spend the majority of the term doing resistance training in the weights room (2 sessions per week), whilst demonstrating self-management as part of the 1.9 standard.
Students continue 2 sessions of weights training per week. They also develop their Functional Anatomy (1.2) knowledge in (and out of) the classroom, which culminates in an assessment where students choose a sporting movement to analyse and apply aspects of Anatomy, Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology to this.
Students analyse a new sporting skill (traditionally Ten Pin Bowling) and explore strategies to improve performance - with the idea being they can take these strategies and apply them to their sports. Students also finish completing the theory component of the 1.1 standard and gather data to support their grade for "A Quality Performance" (1.3), where students are assessed in a selected sport against set criteria.
This course is by selection only. Selections are made by the Athlete Development staff assited by coaches.
