Course Description

A rapidly developing field, Psychology is the scientific study of human behaviour and its biological and mental processes, supplemented by investigations of animal behaviour. Psychologists systematically test ideas and beliefs against theories that are measurable and observable.
The course will cover what causes violence, the Stanford Prison experiment, prejudice, and theories on anger.
Note that this course offers Level 3 achievement standards and Psychology is an approved subject for university entrance.



Course Overview

Term 1
The various approaches to explaining violence and criminality.
Why do people commit murder and violence? Theories include biological, environment and psychodynamic factors.
Approaches internal.

Term 2
Experimental design and experiment internal on memory or anger.
Theories on criminology: how can criminals be helped back into society?

Stanford Prison experiment: why is this so famous?
Famous experiments internal.

Term 3
What cause intelligence? Theories on criminology: how can criminals be helped back into society?
Fields internal.

Issues in Psychology: ethics of animal testing, and gender roles.
Is it ethical to do experiments on monkeys and young children?

Term 4
Preparation for external examination.

Prerequisites

Psychology 2 is recommended. It may help if a student has studied BIo 2 and / or His 2 but this is not required.

Pathway

Psychology is the scientific study of human and animal behaviour. It covers approaches to explaining behaviour, famous experiments, experimental design, and issues in psychology. It leads to several careers in research, social work, the police, counselling, sports psychology, community agencies, marketing, and teaching.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

This course is eligible for subject endorsement.
Course endorsement provides recognition for a student who has performed exceptionally well in an individual course.
Students will gain an endorsement for a course if, in a single school year, they achieve:
* 14 or more credits at Merit or Excellence, and
* at least 3 of these credits from externally assessed standards and 3 credits from internally assessed standards.
