Vocational Literacy - Level 2

Course Description

Literacy is about communicating effectively through reading, writing and speaking, to enrich our lives.

Unit Standards studied include:
- Produce a plan for own future directions

- Write a short report

- Read and comprehend work-related documents in English for a tourism workplace

- Complete a work experience placement

- Explain taxation and other deductions relating to personal income

- Produce a personal targeted CV (curriculum vitae)

- Complete complex forms


This course DOES NOT offer University Entrance Literacy.

This is a course aimed at those students who intend to start a trade or apprenticeship, study at polytech, or who have yet to decide what they intend to do but want to further their understanding of all aspects of literacy.


Course Overview

Term 1
Students begin to think about possible careers and research further training opportunities, skills, and knowledge that they have. The students also begin to recognize the value of accuracy and detail as they practice filling in complex forms, preparing them for the wide world. Literacy will continue to be developed through reading, writing and speaking.

Term 2
Students practice their reading accuracy and comprehension in reading workplace documents. This also involves some research which culminates in the students writing a report, reinforcing the skills they have learned throughout the previous terms. Students are also expected to undertake some work experience through the Gateway programme. Literacy will continue to be developed through reading, writing and speaking.

Term 3
Students will become familiar with the concept of taxation and how it relates to them and their rates of pay. Students will also begin to compile a Curriculum Vitae in order to help secure a job, whether it be full or part-time. Students are also expected to undertake some work experience through the Gateway programme. Literacy will continue to be developed through reading, writing and speaking.

Term 4
Term four is an opportunity for students to ensure they have understood the year's work and that they are prepared for the following year, whether returning or entering the workforce. Students are also expected to undertake some work experience through the Gateway programme, and if necessary a second placement may be found. Literacy will continue to be developed through reading, writing and speaking.

If you did not take a pathway course at Level 1, or achieved fewer than 14 credits in that course, you will need HOD approval.
